The secrets to prolonging the life of your bike suspension

Bike suspensions represent a fundamental component to ensure not only riding comfort but also safety and performance. Suspensions, both front (fork) and rear (shock), are exposed to extreme conditions such as dust, mud and temperature fluctuations, which can significantly affect their effectiveness and durability.

However, with some precautions, it is possible to significantly extend the life of your suspensions, optimizing performance and reducing the frequency of overhauls. So here are the 5 secrets to keeping your bike's suspension at its best.

1. Annual review: prevention is better than cure

The first and most important step to ensuring the longevity of your bike suspension is to subject it to one revision (at least) annual. This preventative practice allows you to identify wear and potential problems early before they can worsen.

During an overhaul, a specialized technician checks every component of the suspension, from oil tightness to the condition of the seals, replacing worn parts and making sure everything is working perfectly. While it may seem like an investment, annual servicing is crucial to maintaining performance and extending the life of your suspension.

Obviously the frequency with which to carry out the service depends on how often you use your bicycle. As a general rule, we recommend a service every 50 hours of use.

2. Cleaning after every outing: an essential ritual

Bike suspension care begins at the end of each ride. Cleaning your suspension from mud, dust and debris is essential to prevent premature wear. Use one soft brush and a cloth to gently remove dirt and debris from the external suspension parts, paying particular attention to the fork legs and shock body.

This simple habit can make the difference in preserving the integrity of the seals and preventing the entry of abrasive particles that can damage the internal components.

3. Lubricate the stems: a gesture of care

Lubrication of the fork tubes and shock absorber is another fundamental step in maintaining bike suspensions. Using a specific lubricant for suspensions, apply a small amount to the outsides of the stems, then move the suspension up and down to distribute the lubricant.

This not only improves the smoothness and response of the suspension but also protects the seals and reduces friction, decreasing internal wear and prolonging the useful life of the suspension.

4. Say no to the pressure washer: cleaning must be done with care

Although using a pressure washer may seem like a quick solution to cleaning your bike, it is strongly discouraged for bike suspension.

High water pressure can force moisture and debris into the most delicate parts of the suspension, compromising seals and accelerating wear. Opt for one instead more delicate cleaning, using low pressure water and a soft cloth or brush, to avoid damage and ensure a longer life of your suspensions.

5. Personalized adjustment: to each their own configuration

A final crucial aspect to maximize the life of bike suspensions is their correct adjustment based to the weight of the cyclist and to driving style. A suspension that is too stiff or too soft not only compromises ride quality, but can also accelerate wear on internal components. Having your suspension optimally tuned ensures it works within the parameters it was designed for, reducing stress on seals and internals and preventing premature damage.

Custom suspension tuning involves setting the air pressure (in the pneumatic suspension), compression and rebound adjustment, and in some cases, preload adjustment in spring suspensions. These adjustments should be made in consideration of the type of soil most frequented and of the level of aggressive driving. For example, riding over rough, technical terrain will require different setups than smoother, faster trails.

Consulting a specialized technician can provide a starting point for these adjustments. Additionally, experimenting with different settings during rides can help you find the configuration that best suits your needs, improving not only the durability of your suspension but also the overall riding experience.

Bike suspension – constant care and attention

Keeping your bike suspension in excellent condition does not require Herculean efforts, but rather constant attention and care. By following these four simple secrets, you will be able to enjoy a more comfortable, safe and high-performance ride, while reducing the need for heavy maintenance.
